We're often asked why our 'Introduction to Piano' course is designed for little ones age 6 to 9. Let's jump straight in.
Sweet-spot for learning
At this age, children are developing strong connections between hearing, sight and movement - this makes for an ideal time for learning, as the piano requires all three!
Physically fit
In this age group, children's fine motor skills are developed so that their hands are able to play with multiple fingers, with the strength and control needed for piano playing.
They (hopefully) won't get bored
Any younger than 6 and we'd probably struggle to keep their focus. But little ones in this age bracket should be able to remain engaged in structured group classes - as long as we keep it fun!
A little help from school
Basic music theory concepts require a certain level of knowledge and understanding, which should align with what children this age learn at school. For example, the concept of 'half' of something - essential when learning note values! Their reading ability must also be at a level where they can comfortably read some lyrics and simple instructions.
The social side
Our group lessons foster a sociable learning environment, where we encourage turn-taking, listening and praising each other's work, and teamwork. This age bracket will be developmentally ready to practise these crucial skills.
Building blocks for life
We all know that experiences in our early years shape who we are, and a positive experience in music at this young age could have a lifelong impact. By making the most of their naturally curious and enthusiastic natures, we can help form confident, self-assured little musicians.
